Abstract:
The collection contains Silver's manuscript for "The Diary of a Freedom Rider," as well as related correspondence with her
mother while in prison during the summer of 1961. In addition, the collection also contains brochures and materials from
Silver's political career, as well as audiocassette interviews from the 1984 Democratic National Convention.

Carol Ruth Silver was a lawyer and former elected official in San Francisco. In 1961, Silver joined the Freedom Riders to
directly challenge racial segregation in the South. She was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi in 1961 and was incarcerated
for 40 days. She returned to school and later was elected for three terms (1977-1989) to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
